StorySense: Uncovering deeper layers of Narrative Understanding

StorySense

The high-level grand challenge we aim to contribute to is narrative understanding. This involves, not only the development of automatic methods suited to extract complex semantic relations between the narrative components and the different narrative levels, but also to enrich their formal representation with links to knowledge-based and ontologies. The ultimate goal is to model a computational representation of a narrative in a form of a narrative ontology.

Our hard working team

Alipio

Alípio Jorge

Principal Investigator U. Porto and INESC TEC

His aim is to make the computer get the essential of a narrative, represent it and show the narrative as a timeline, a slide-show, a video or a game. The plan is to apply Machine Learning and NLP

Ricardo Campos

Ricardo Campos

Co-Investigator UBI and INESC TEC

His aim is to get new insights from news articles. In particular, he is interested in applying nlp as a means to understand how events relate to the temporal dimension.

John

Purificação Silvano

PhD Researcher U. Porto and CLUP

Her aim is to research temporal and causal relations in news articles and to contribute to the formal representation of meaning in narratives.

Sergio

Sérgio Nunes

PhD Researcher U. Porto and INESC TEC

His aim is to explore novel solutions and applications for the automatic visualization and interaction with densely annotated narratives.

Antonio

António Leal

PhD Researcher U. Porto and CLUP

António is mainly interested in the formal representation of meaning in Portuguese news, namely how tense, aspect and nominal reference can be encoded.

Evelin

Evelin Amorim

PhD Researcher INESC TEC

My main interests are NLP related research. Specifically, extraction of information of text, automatic essay scoring, and all the subtasks related to these two fields.

Nuno Guimarães

Nuno Guimarães

PhD Researcher U. Porto and INESC TEC
Hugo

Hugo Sousa

PhD Student U. Porto and INESC TEC

Looking for a away to make models temporally aware.

Luís Filipe Cunha

Luís Filipe Cunha

PhD Student U. Porto and INESC TEC

Developing algorithms to identify and categorize events, extracting meaningful information about occurrences, relationships, and actions from text.
